What are Partnering Pedagogies?

Partnering Pedagogies??? What's that??

Many educators are unfamiliar with this term. To answer the question, watch these video presentations, created by ED 307 students, which present overviews of different types of partnering pedagogies used in K12 classrooms.

Technology Integration

Students in ED 410/411 and ED 540 have been learning about technology integration. What is it? What is it not? What does research say about it?

The following video provides a great introduction to this term -

G Gleason from ED 410/411 - Technology Integration Overview
A Beasley from ED 540 - Technology Integration Overview

Below, I have shared some videos which include some great elements. If you combine these elements, with the content, you're sure to keep your viewers engaged!
  • W Davidson - Embedded videos - The video embedded at the beginning of this presentation immediately captures the viewers attention.
  • T Huligan - Visually engaging - This video engages the viewer because the narration corresponds with the fairly constantly changing visual stimuli.
  • J Smith - Power of pictures - The presenter does a great job explaining concepts by manipulating images.
  • S Wallace - Engaging introduction - The viewer is excited and ready to learn simply based on the intro to this video.

An investigation into a Partnering Pedagogy

Students in ED 307 have been investigating partnering in the classroom, as discussed by Mark Prensky

The final part of this module included students creating investigative reports about various partnering methodologies. The following video is an excellent investigative report about guided discovery, by B Ellison. Enjoy!

Teaching with Technology

ED 305 students have been learning a lot of new content this semester. Most recently they created digital presentations about how to teach using a variety of different technologies.

ED 307 More Great Videos

Once again, ED 307 students do a great job! This past week 307 students submitted their second presentation about a specifically assigned partnering pedagogy. As usual, all students did a terrific job with the content. The students below did an outstanding job overall - creating visually engaging, content-packed presentations -

Teaching with Technology Presentations

ED 305 students really stepped it up with their teaching with technology presentations. For this project, students are encouraged to implement best practices for creating and delivering digital presentations. Overall the 305 students did a great job. One area of shortcoming for most students was the use of graphics in the presentation - I think this is mostly due to the availability of open-source graphics that matched their content.

One area where just about every student did an outstanding job was with presenting the information. There was VERY little reading of content. Most students discussed their content in a manner that made the presentation enjoyable and easy to listen to and learn from. I've never had a group of students do so well on this particular area.

A few students that I would like to recognize for their submissions are listed below. While these presentations may not be perfect, I've detailed the aspect of the presentation that was particularly good. You will notice that most of these had a nice presentation rhythm, with few extended periods of time on a zoom.

Space Lab

If you want a fun and exciting boost for your science class, be sure to visit the YouTube Space Lab Channel - not only do they have some really great videos, but they also challenge students (people) to participate in making their channel even better. Its a great channel for anyone, but a super addition to science classes.

If an educational act is to be efficacious, it will be only that one which tends to help toward the complete unfolding of life. To be thus helpful it is necessary rigorously to avoid the arrest of spontaneous movements and the imposition of arbitrary tasks.

Simple K12

SimpleK12 is a great resource for teachers. They create lots of great training videos that include best practices, how to use certain technologies & some that are designed for student instruction. They also produce some really great ebooks & webinars. If you haven't joined their mailing list, you should!

Check out this great plagiarism video produced by SimpleK12 - there are lots of other great ones on their YouTube channel (to which you should also subscribe!).

Skill Analysis made easy

Got a video camera (your phone probably does)? Got a computer? Then you have the necessary ingredients for preparing videos for analyzing skills. No fancy, high-cost software needed.

1. Video a student performing a skill
2. Upload the video to Windows Live Movie Maker (free product from Windows - download online)
3. Open the movie maker program
4. Import the video
5. Click on "edit"
6. Change speed to .5, .25 or .125 to slow
7. Publish the movie - view and analyze

If an educational act is to be efficacious, it will be only that one which tends to help toward the complete unfolding of life. To be thus helpful it is necessary rigorously to avoid the arrest of spontaneous movements and the imposition of arbitrary tasks.

Animoto rocks Drew's graduation

If you haven't already created an Animoto account, I highly recommend it! It's certainly worth the $39 yearly fee to have the ease of creating really great videos, simply! Also, you can now download the Animoto app to your phone and make and share videos directly from your iPhone - awesome service by Animoto!

21st Century Swing

Today, I will be presenting the 21st century swing at the ASAHPERD Conference in Orange Beach, AL. Come by and swing with us!

For the 21st Century Swing you will need:

  1. 5-8 simple 8-16 count dance moves (see the ones for today's event below)
  2. Device that videos
  3. Website to host videos
  4. Computers/devices on which students can view dance moves
For today's session here's what I did:
  1. I created 5 simple dance moves and videoed myself and Kelly performing the moves and teaching the moves.
  2. I loaded each simple dance move video instruction onto an Apple iBook computer.
  3. I created 5 stations, one for each different dance move. At each station, I placed the computer with the video instruction and written dance instructions.
  4. The following steps explain using the jigsaw teaching method - each group member is responsible for learning a specific part of the dance. The group members will reconvene and teach their dance moves. All dance moves will be combined into one dance. Each groups dance will be unique because there is no required order for combining the 5 dance moves.
    1. Participants will be placed in squads of 5. Each squad member will be assigned a station to which he/she will go and learn the dance move.
    2. Participants go to their assigned station and learn the dance move by viewing and participating in the video dance instruction.
    3. Participants will reconvene with their groups and teach other members the dance move they will learn
    4. Groups will combine the 5 dance moves into one dance - each groups final dance will be unique
    5. After practicing the complete dance, groups will perform their dance for the entire class.
    6. The instructor video tapes the performance of each group
  5. Upon completion of videoing the students, the instructor will upload the videos to a website (personal website, youtube, etc.) where the videos can be voted on by friends, family, etc.

5 Simple Dance Moves used for Today's Presentation:

1-2 (knees together) Bend, Bend - while snapping R hand up & diagonally on bend

7-8 Repeat with both hands performing waist down snap

1 Step forward on R - snapping arm diagonal toward floor
2 Step forward on L - using the same snap
3-4 Repeat 1-2
5-8 Repeat entire sequence above, but stepping backwards
*May choose to begin sequence again, facing a new direction

R & L Hop and Pivot

1 Hop R foot to the R (left stationary) - arms follow feet
2 Hop L to L - R hops back to middle
3 Repeat 1
4 Repeat 2
5-8 Pivot counter clockwise on L 1/2 way around (facing back)

1-4 Repeat 1-4 above, but starting to the L
5-8 Pivot back to the front, L foot stationary

Grapevine Pumps

1-4 Grapevine to R
5-8 Knee bends while pumping R arm to R diagonally upwards

Videos in the Classroom

Watching videos in the classroom is nothing new, but having students create them may be very new to some classrooms. Students in ED 305 Technology and Media were tasked with the challenge of creating a video to "advertise" the Athens State University College of Education.

Take a look and vote for your favorite video - there is a place to vote after the fourth video.
